1920

  • Deep Hard seam reached and putting in pit bottom arch
  • South pit deepening continuing
  • Driving drift to Deep Hard
  • New water-softener installed on South pit-top
  • Strike from Oct 16 - Nov 6
  • Problems with Walker fan-engine
  • New winding engine ordered from Markhams
  • Lower seams proved down to Blackshale

1921

  • 21 ft diameter drum ordered for South pit
  • Broken guides in North shaft halt production for 5 - 6 hours
  • Deep Hard pit bottom girder frame installed
  • Strike from April to June
  • Water level in South shaft threatened Deep Hard inset. 3”x6” triple ram electric pump installed to pump to Top Hard pit bottom.
  • Problems with drift heading after strike due to falls and water
  • Aug 18: detaching hook failure allows loaded cage to fall at North pit.
  • Sept: North winding engines completely overhauled, two defective valve seats renewed
  • Guide rails installed in South shaft (~ 8 months)
  • 9 new boilers installed and old north side boilers removed
  • Old twin-drum haulage engine erected to act as temporary winding engine at South pit.

1922

  • Overwind accident at the at South shaft allows cages to fall to pit bottom and destroys the temporary winding engine.
  • Replacement temporary winder purchased from Gilfach Colliery in South Wales and is installed at the South pit
  • New boilers being installed in East boiler-house
  • Problems with Walker fan engine
  • New power-house constructed and turbine-generator installed
  • Drift reaches Deep Hard seam at 620 yd and links up with heading driven from pit-bottom
  • 3000gall/hr three-throw electric pump installed in TH pit-bottom to pump DH water to surface
  • Old South pit winding-engines removed.

1923

  • New winding-engine foundations constructed
  • Deep Hard headings being driven for new faces
  • Exhaust steam accumulators installed and feeding the Bellis & Morcom mixed-pressure turbine
  • Markham winder installed in South engine-house
  • New flue constructed

  • manpower        :  1896 underground, 281 surface

1924

  • New brake-engine fitted to North winder by Markham & Co. Ltd.
  • Problems with screening Hards and Cobbles on South screens.
  • Decided to replace South screens

1925

  • Tender of £4757 to replace South screens from Plowright Bros
  • South screen replacement under construction
  • Recommendation that wooden guides in North shaft be replaced with steel rails. In last 3 years maintenance costs were £5000
  • Replacement of wooden guides deferred
  • Ex-Pleasley temporary winding-engines installed at Bilsthorpe colliery for sinking

1926

  • New South screens in operation
  • Need to replace 40 year old North screens at an estimated cost of £6000
  • Ordered a complete screening plant including Greaves Unit Washers at a cost of £18600 from Plowright Bros
  • Long Service Certificates awarded to 44 Pleasley men for 40 years service
  • National miners strike

1927

  • St. Johns Ambulance Division formed at Pleasley
  • Production from Deep Hard terminated in June

1928

  • Aerial ropeway to tip on north side of Midland Railway  cutting  constructed (SIWCo archives).
  • Colliery working only 3 days per week

1929

  • Pit head baths under construction.
